Ask the designer questions First designer: Game environment designer Saija Wintersun I ask: Hello, I am a postgraduate student studying MA Games Design at the University of Central Lancashire, and my research focus is environment design. My lecturer Jim Thompson recommended you to me. I am very interested in your work such as Sniper Elite 4, and I hope you don't mind if I ask you a few questions about your work and process? First question: I saw a scene in Sniper Elite 4 that combines nature and architecture very well. Would you be able to tell me how you draw inspiration for the scene from the real world? Saija Wintersun answer:20:32 Hello! I'm happy to help! It's been something like 8 years since sniper 4, so l don't remember many details from it. The level I worked on was an Italian fishing village, so there was a lot of existing reference. Mainly I used Google maps to look around the places and found the little details that make the place special. When I worked on t...

Design process(begin to make model)

After completing the rough scene concept painting of the four areas, I began to model, the first part of the snow mountain, I mentioned in the concept painting of the blog, the environmental situation in the progress of the snow mountain is:  "The road to Metuo County, near the Galongla tunnel road is still white, endless. But over the Galongla mountains, green everywhere, it's another world. The vegetation is lush and the river is running. These are the descriptions in the book, and first I distilled the key words: when I get to Metuo County, I first pass the iceberg, then I see the river, and then I can combine the two, and then observe the traditional Tibetan architecture: prayer flags." Because I had never seen snow mountains and green plants together in reality, I imagined blending it, with prayer flags standing on the melted snow and mountains in the distance. However, before modeling, I thought that I could not rely on imagination without fact, so I did some search...

Ask the designer questions First designer: Game environment designer Saija Wintersun Hello, I am a postgraduate majoring in game design from the University of Central Lancashire, and my research focus is game scene design. My teacher Jim Thompson recommended you to me. I was very shocked after reading your works, such as Sniper Elite 4, so I have a few questions to ask. I hope that after you see the information, you can take a little time from your busy schedule to answer me, I will be grateful. First question: I saw a scene in Sniper Elite 4 that combines nature and architecture very well. How do you draw inspiration from the scene in the real world? (游戏截图) After Saija Wintersun answer, I will follow up with this question: How to balance realistic scenes and design scenes? Second question: How did you decide on the overall style of the game scene? For example, Sniper Elite 4 is a World War II sniper game. It takes place in the beautiful Mediterranean coast of Italy. Is its overall sty...

Design process(Reflections on the use of AI)

Reflections on the use of AI In the process of completing the concept painting of the scene design, I encountered some problems, such as not being able to better combine the actual scene with the scene I imagined through the description in the book; For example, there are some descriptions that don't have real cases that I can't imagine out of thin air. So, on top of that, I used AI to draw for inspiration. So far, I've used AI painting in these areas: In this paragraph, the real-life Yadan landscape is depicted, but the author adds that although we are in a desert area, the further we go inside, the more we will see a dense forest like a swimming pool. The original text of the book reads: "As soon as we left, it was cloudy again, as if it was going to rain. I secretly sighed in my heart that the mysteries of nature are really endless, and that there is such a wet and rainy oasis in the depths of the arid Qaidam Gobi. This canyon is not like the Yadan Canyon seen in th...

Essay process(Wednesday)

The questions for the practitioners involved First of all, since I'm designing environments for games, I think I'm looking for someone to consult on that needs to be both design, environment and fiction. The first one I want to interview is the film environment designer. I think the movie scenes will be more realistic, so they need to examine more realistic environmental factors, which is a great inspiration for me. I want to know how they decide the specific context of the scene design, how they choose some scenes in reality to blend, and how they better integrate the real scene and the fictional environment. I will ask a few questions from the perspective of environmental ideas and creativity: 1. Sources of inspiration: What do you usually get inspiration from when designing a movie set? How to cultivate the ability to find inspiration for students studying scene design? 2. Theme fit: How to ensure that the design of the movie set fits perfectly with the theme and style of th...
