 LINK AND RESEARCH OF GAME SCENE DESIGN

AND REAL SCENE

 

My project is to create a 3D game scene modeling based on the famous Chinese literary work The Lost Tomb.When I first looked for the direction of games, I found that I was very interested in the scene design in many types of games, and my undergraduate major was also in environmental design.

Why choose this IP? The Lost Tomb is an adventure novel written by the writer NanPai Sanshu. It has a large number of readers in China, including me. It tells the story of the three protagonists exploring various tombs to find the truth. The various scenes in the book are fascinating, and I often have the impulse to really see these scenes. According to my investigation, the setting of "exploring treasure, solving cultural puzzles" based on Chinese history has not been developed into a game. Therefore, what I want to do is to design the scenes in the book, which can not only satisfy the yearning of readers, but also let more people who have not read the book know about the Chinese "traditional profession" and architectural style, the unique humanities and landforms of China. Compared with the simple scene painting, the scene design of the game is different from the traditional scene description and design environment, and it is a dynamic scene effect. It requires the designer to be innovative and unique, reasonable. Therefore, the designed scene should make a specific and comprehensive analysis of each link of the characters' activities, so that the final results will have a strong sense of spatial art. In pursuit of the beauty of the camera, we should also pay attention to the scene design of game animation, according to the environment, design the corresponding scene. To choose the right scene, Angle and visual effects, to ensure that the game animation scene is comfortable and natural, vivid.

In the design of virtual scenes, I think that whether it is games or animation, the design of these virtual scenes must be "credible" under the premise of creativity, that is, to follow the characteristics of real scenes, and create on this basis. The movie 《The Lord of the Rings》 is a good example. In the book, the ancient capital of mankind, is depicted as a magnificent and magnificent castle. On the walls stood several high towers and fortresses, symbolizing the power and rule of the Highland Kingdom. The whole castle is built in white stone, making it shine in the sun, giving a solemn and spectacular feeling. The film team's conceptual understanding and design depiction of the building are equally full of visual shock, showing the magnificence and solemnity of the castle through exquisite special effects and architectural details.

So I think in the design of game scenes, reality is important, but imagination is also indispensable.

In addition, in addition to the inherent scene, I think the design of the game scene also needs to add atmosphere and color harmony.

 

In the book Architecture and Level Design, I once mentioned the term of giant structure. What is a giant structure? First of all, people are the scale of all things, and people usually have a clear understanding of the level of meters and meters, while the construction beyond a certain scale will bring indescribable fear. The huge buildings, such as pyramids, often bring a sense of rule and conquest; The Real Lucaya Academy in the game Elden Ring - Giant Architectureshows more Gothic architecture, so the overall style will be tall and thin, showing a strong emotion of mystery, pathos and nobility. The interior is primarily academic and religious, with the layout of the Basilica's main halls and side aisles displaying a typical Basilica spatial feature, while the soaring ceiling reflects pure rationality. In my opinion, the use of architectural shape and style to show the atmosphere to be created by the scene can also be used for reference.

Similarly, in the scene design, the use of color can also play a great help.

First, it can construct spatial perception. In the game, the nearby grass, road and other objects bright and clear color, the distant scenery such as mountains, rivers will appear more gray. This is because color has the law of perspective change, which exists in the subconscious of the viewer, even if not clearly tell the cause of perception, it can indeed feel this change. Therefore, the color design gives the game a basic sense of space, making the game screen from the plane to three-dimensional. Of course, if you want to break through this law, you can innovate on the premise of following the basic law, so that the color changes of temperature and shade and light are reversed. The use of colors can also create a game orientation. During the course of the game, the aggregation and dispersion of colors will guide the player's sight to indicate their own position, and highlight them to guide them into the next stage. Some games will use a lot of unsaturated gray and black to create an oppressive atmosphere, when the player will naturally move in the bright direction; if the dark, daunting color collocation and warmth, bright colors are used together to guide the direction, the player will obviously move in the bright direction, this tendency is caused by the biological effect. An example of a biological effect is that when the viewer sees red, the red light focuses behind the retina, which forces the lens to become more prominent, thereby stretching the viewer's visual center forward. This may explain why colors such as warm colors (such as blue) will give the impression of progress. This way of color design can be used in games to distinguish its important environment and content.

After some research process, I enriched my design with the description of the scene in the book Notes on The Lost Tomb based on my gained experience.

For example, the Zhang Jia Ancient Building, which appears many times in the book, is located in the city of Banay in western China, so my design should combine the local characteristics. Book zhongyuan sentence is: " the neighborhood is all mountains, Guangxi mountain mountains, hundreds of kilometers of mountains into an area of more than five million mu of forest, the center is hundreds of thousands of acres of primitive jungle areas, mountains, forests, waterfall streams, is said to be the cave, is a group of fairy gathering. There are also the mysterious creature —— Miluo hidden in the hinterland of ten thousand mountains, surrounded by mountains and filled with fog, as well as the ancient Yao villages and the bottom of the lake."So I first drew a sketch:

The Tibetan characteristic building: The White Pagoda

The White Pagoda in Tibet symbolizes longevity and the protection of the people, indicating that the Dharma shines on the earth like the sun and the moon, shining on the earth forever.

For the description of an important part of the book —— Motuo County, I drew some scenes based on research.

"There is only one county in Motuo. Motuo county is all in the world.”

On the way to Motuo County, the road near the Galongla Tunnel is still white with snow. But over the Garunla Mountain, all green, completely another world. The vegetation flourish and the river flows.

Tibet is the most sunny and religious place. A large number of Tibetan people have gathered here for generations. Architecture, religion and culture are deeply influenced by Tibetan culture. The origin of prayer flags: according to legend, the Buddha sat under the bodhi tree, holding the scriptures with his eyes closed, and suddenly a strong wind blew away the scriptures in the hands of the Buddha. They were broken into thousands of pieces under the action of the wind, and were brought by the wind to the hands of the toiling people around the world. Those who get the fragments of the scriptures are happy. In order to thank the Buddha for his gift, people made triangles out of colored cloth, printed with scriptures and Buddha statues, hanging in the place where the wind blew, to eliminate disasters and pray, bless peace. Therefore, in various mountain roads, waterways, temples and people's homes in Tibetan areas, small flags with strings of scriptures can be seen everywhere tied on ropes, hanging the meaning of hanging prayer flags: dancing in the wind is to recite sutras once, constantly convey people's wishes to the gods, pray for good luck and eliminate disaster.

 

According to the description in the book, to county first through the iceberg, and then see the river, combine the two, according to the data and photos, I can create a new environment, mountains, water and flags are the real world, but the real scenery is mostly near far shallow, such arrangement seems to conform to common sense, but in the game scene, can guide people to the flags rather than across it to the distance.

The five colors of the Tibetan prayer flags represent the five phenomena in nature.
